Dedicated to the craft of growing premium quality grapes.
Well known to Niagara’s wine community, our two vineyards have a common goal of producing the highest quality grapes for premium winemakers. Located along the Twenty Mile Bench on the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, Giffen Vineyards is home to Cuesta and Butler’s Grant Vineyards.
Giffen Vineyards, has its own in house vineyard management team led by vineyard manager, Kevin Bailey. We’ve spent the last five seasons increasing the quality, balance and beauty of our two vineyards.
Our dynamic vineyard program promotes vine health and sustainability. We are very pleased with our efforts so far and are dedicated to ensuring we create premium quality fruit that best expresses the terroir of our vineyards.
In 2016, we continued our commitment to quality and undertook a replanting of 10 acres of new Pinot Noir (clones 115 and 667) at Butler’s Grant. This will compliment the existing blocks of Pinot Noir and enable Giffen Vineyards to possess the 4 main clones (777, 828, 667 and 115) needed to produce premium quality wine that our winemaker’s demand.
Giffen Vineyard’s focus now and forever will be the four varietals that best flourish in the cool climate and limestone rich soils of the Twenty Mile Bench: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Riesling.
The name Cuesta is defined as “a long, low ridge with a steep escarpment on one side and a gentle slope on the other”. Originally planted in 1999, Cuesta describes the vineyard perfectly, with its picturesque 33 acres of planted vines, beautifully surrounded by 38 acres of ravines and Carolinian forest.
The vineyard features Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Riesling. A truly exceptional vineyard that is now coming into its own with our team’s increased care and attention.
Butler’s Grant Vineyard
Named after Colonel John Butler, Butler’s Grant was one of the first vineyards planted on the Bench, originally planted in 1988. The vineyard was part of a land grant given to Butler by the Crown for his services during the Revolutionary War.
Situated on a low ridge that fits nicely against the gently sloping Bench escarpment, it looks over Lake Ontario, providing a serene and charming site for 27 acres of old vine Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Riesling.
